Our client

Our client, the Maastricht Convention Bureau (MCB), is responsible for the international destination marketing of Maastricht as a congress destination. The MCB proactively attracts national and international congresses to the Maastricht region. MCB focuses specifically on international association congresses that preferably have a link with the economic and scientific fields of excellence within this region. MCB acts as an independent party and the objectives are being realised in close cooperation with regional partners and stakeholders. For congress organisers and associations, the MCB is a free, ‘one-stop-shop’ for information, personal advice and mediation. The MCB is a non-profit organisation, acting with mandate of the city of Maastricht. In the last 4 years, the number of acquisitions of MCB has increased from 14 congresses to 29 congresses per year and the market is still not saturated with a lot of potential for the future. Besides, there is a close cooperation with MECC Maastricht in attracting congresses. To further embody the strategic ambitions there are two job openings for the position of Business Development Manager. One BDM will focus on the field of ‘health life sciences’, the other focuses on the field of ‘chemical industries new materials’.

Outgoing, commercial and service oriented person with a heart for Maastricht who can easily network in the academic environment.

The challenge

The challenge: You are independently and actively involved in creating business for the organisation, its partners, and the region of Maastricht. Hence, you are going to contact and inspire potential clients to organise association congresses in the region of Maastricht. In this regard you work closely with important stakeholders such as the University of Maastricht, the MUMC+, the Brightlands’ campuses and MECC Maastricht, to develop new congress initiatives and winning them for the city of Maastricht. According to your, yet to develop, yearly sales plan you proactively and independently search for business opportunities. For instance, you will visit associations and academic meetings. You act as a project leader starting from the first initiative until winning the tender. Within this entire process you will provide the required services to the potential client. In addition, you will invite potential clients for a visit to the region of Maastricht and accompany them personally. Moreover, you act as a sparring partner for the academics involved and you visit international network meetings to expand your network in order to generate business on the long term. Furthermore, you have your part in making bid books and presenting these to your potential clients.

Requirements

Your profile: The most important factor to fit the profile is the capability to contact, inspire and convince potential clients to organise their congresses in Maastricht. Accordingly, you need passion, courage, communication skills, the ability to lobby, interpersonal sensitivity and commercial power to succeed. Additionally, you need to have a university or applied sciences degree and a minimal of two years relevant working experience preferably in the congress branch. Furthermore, you have a talent for pitching and presenting.
