Our client Sappi is a worldwide diversified wood fibre group, focused on dissolving wood pulp, paper-based solutions and high-quality functional biomaterials. Production facilities are located on three continents with sales activities in more than 150 countries. Sappi uses its leading global position and substantial investments in research and development (R&D) in coated graphical paper, special packaging material, dissolving wood pulp and biorefinery processes to anticipate growing global demand for functional high-quality biomaterials.
Sustainability is not an add-on, but deeply ingrained in the way Sappi manages its daily activities, mitigates risks, utilizes chances and plans for the future. Sappi has taken responsibility for its worldwide best practices in the field of sustainability by measuring, guarding and communicating its economical, social and environmental performance in a transparent way. Sappi is continuously diversifying its product portfolio and is exploring new business opportunities in packaging and specialties, and in fields that complement paper and paper pulp. One of the new business initiatives for example is ‘Symbio’. This is a new biocomposite material combining high-quality cellulose fibres derived from wood, and a plastic material such as polypropylene. Symbio is suitable for a broad range of applications across furniture, appliances, consumer electronics and automotive components. Sappi Symbio is using a market-driven approach to develop new products and currently, a basic portfolio and production capacity has been established.
Your key focus is to lead the development of the Sappi Symbio products – the market and service offering, and value proposition. You translate the customer requirements into product specifications for a wide range of markets including highly regulated and technical markets, such as automotive and consumer goods. You drive new product development through structured product development programmes involving sales, R&D, engineering, manufacturing and finance. You lead the marketing effort and are responsible for the design, branding and promotion of Symbio products that are fit for purpose and generate the required profit margins.

Your main activities are translating customer requirements into product specifications in highly regulated and technical markets. You own and maintain the product specifications to stay relevant to market requirements and retain a competitive position. This includes designing and motivating the nature and scope of present and future product lines, or brand extensions and packaging changes.

Furthermore, you are responsible for the costing of a specific portfolio of products and determine target product pricing by utilizing market information, reviewing production and sales costs, and incorporating profit targets. You develop business plans with sales, brand communications and production to test, launch and commercialize new products. In the same way, you work on improvements to existing products and new technologies aligned with Sappi’s objectives – both financial and operational.

In addition to this, you determine the competitive position by benchmarking Symbio with current and direct competitor products. You are providing source data for marketing communications and material, and define product marketing communication material and objectives. You are working closely with the General Manager and the Sales Manager to develop product and market sales strategies. You provide information for management by preparing short-term and long-term product sales forecasts, and special reports and analysis. Finally, you participate in business team meetings, and budget and forecast preparation processes.
In this challenging position, you report directly to the General Manager of Symbio.
You have a relevant higher degree (MSc or PhD) and extensive technical experience (>10 years) in the plastics and/or composite industry, with a focus on cost management and product engineering. Furthermore, you have a proven ability to build new portfolios and gain market traction for new products. You have a thorough understanding of injection moulding and experience in automotive, homeware/kitchenware, furniture and/or acoustic markets or similar. You are a self-starter who is able to work independently to build a new product portfolio. You have a strong technical product management focus and a proven track record of success in a challenging environment, with a natural curiosity in order to develop new products, markets and customers. You have experience with innovation processes in a B2B environment and the ability to lead groups in a matrix structure. You are a strong team player that likes to operate in cross-functional teams. Furthermore, you are diplomatic and a strong communicator with good people skills, and good listening and communication skills (written and verbal). Fluency in English is required (knowledge of any other languages – German, French or Dutch – will be considered an asset). Finally, the position requires extensive travelling including nights away on a regular basis.
